What Are PFAS?

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are chemicals that have been used in a wide range of consumer and industrial products since the 1940s due to their resistance to grease, oil, water, and heat.

Certain PFAS are authorized by the FDA for limited use in cookware, food packaging, and food processing equipment. However, the widespread use has resulted in increasing levels of contamination in the water, air, and soil, and exposure to certain PFAS has been linked to serious health effects. 

Because of this, some states, including California, Washington, New York, and Maine, are beginning to ban the use of PFAS chemicals.
